The short answer to this question is no! You don’t need to add anything to your journal that you don’t want to. Whenever you are considering adding a spread to your bullet journal, ask yourself these three questions:
- Will I use it?
- Is it useful to me?
- Will it bring me joy?
If you don’t answer yes to at least one of these then don’t include it!
Laying out a tracker for the year
There are two main styles of annual tracker – A year in pixels (see left pic) and a monthly calendar style (see right pic).

Do I need a key?
If the thing you are tracking has a range of responses (I.e mood, weather, number of steps) then you will need to add a key to explain what each colour or symbol means.

What can I track?
There are no real limits to what you can track, but remember it should be useful to you! Here are a few ideas:
- Weather
- Mood
- Steps
- Heath
- Habits
- Menstruation
- Water Intake
- Exercise
- No Spend
- Savings
- Reading
- Sleep

Remembering to complete your tracker
For me, this is the most difficult step of having an annual tracker! Here are a few strategies you may want to try…
- SET A REMINDER – On your phone or computer, to remind you to complete the tracker each day.
- HABIT STACK – Combine completing your tracker with a habit you do every day without fail! (i.e. maybe you complete it each morning when you have a coffee).
- ADD A WEEKLY TRACKER – Add a tracker to your weekly set-up and copy over the result to your annual tracker at the end of the month.
Confession time!
I have been journaling for 8 years and have never completed an annual tracker in my Bullet Journal.
I love the idea of having a completed tracker at the end of the year but never remember to complete it.
This year I will not be including one in my journal setup – what about you?
